After a relatively successful run in Event 1 of the WBCOOP, I was looking forward to another good run in Event 6 on Saturday night (had to swap to Event 6 instead of the Main Event due to work shifts).

Managed to chip up during the first hour or so and managed to reach the first break with a good chip stack (albeit slightly below the average stack at that point). Carried on build my stack slowly and managed to out last the dead stacks on the tournament.

Unfortunately that is about as good as it got.

Not long after the dead stacks got blinded out, I finally hit a decent hand, not just a decent hand but the best starting hand in Hold'em, Pocket Aces. Not only that but after my initial raise, I had someone re-raise me, someone with a bigger stack than I had. Brilliant. Fantastic. So I shove all-in and he calls and turns over AJo. I couldn't believe it. I was practically assured of a double up, which would've meant I was sure to get another ticket of some value as we weren't too far from the prize places at that point.

Running the hand through the odds calculator at Pokernews.com shows that I was a 91% favourite to win the hand. I don't think you can get better odds to win a hand pre-flop than that.

God on the other hand had other ideas.

The flop came down all Clubs. This was a worry as my opponent was holding the Ace of Clubs.

OK. Scary flop, but still a 63% favourite to win the hand. Until the Turn card.

Another Club!!!!

At that point I was drawing dead and out of the tournament. Unbelievable.

Oh well. I'll have to console myself with the prize from Event 1 and look forward to having a go when the SCOOP comes along in the next couple of months.

Last night marked the start of the week long series of events on Pokerstars called the World Blogger Championship of Online Poker, or WBCOOP for short.

As I occassionally blog, I managed to get tickets to enter 2 of the 7 WBCOOP events running through this week, ending with the 7th event on Sunday, the WBCOOP Main Event.

I used one of those tickets to enter last nights 1st event and will use the other to enter the Main Event on Sunday.

The starting field for last nights tournament was 1688, with the top 153 finishers getting tickets for entry to events in the Spring Championship of Online Poker (or SCOOP for short). Depending on exactly how high the finishing position was determined the value of the ticket.

After almost 5 hours of play I finished in 36th place winning a $33 SCOOP Ticket.

The penultimate hand I played crippled me, leaving me with a stack of less than 1/2 a big blind. I raised with a pair of Kings and was called by one other player. It turned out that he had a pair of Jacks and make a set on the flop. All the money went in on the turn and as no king appeared on the river, that was basically that.

I could've been very unset at a nasty suckout like that, but can't really complain as, in an earlier hand, I ran a pair of Tens into a pair of Queens but managed to hit a set on that hand.

All in all, not a bad evening.

Looking forward to Sunday and the WBCOOP Main Event. I'll let you know how it goes.

People that are interested in professional poker tournaments may have heard of the European Poker Tour, a series of poker tournaments covering Europe (and the Bahamas!) that culminates each year with the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo.

This poker tour was the brain child of a gentleman called John Duthie with the help of the online poker room PokerStars.

It has proved to be such a success in the 6 years that it has been running that it has now spawned a host of other poker tours spanning the world.

Listed below are the currently slate of national and international poker tours that PokerStars has created (roughly in chronological order, starting with the oldest first):

Wow. I think that just leaves Africa!

I have to admit a certain pang of jealousy as I read the reports on various Poker news sites about the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure tournament that is currently running at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas.

I follow some professional poker players on Twitter and currently most of them are soaking up the sunshine and heat as well as the poker at the PCA.

Given the current weather in the UK, whilst by no means as bad as some areas of the world, it is being reported on the BBC that this is the coldest winter in the UK for 30 years, meaning that I was 7 the last time we have weather this bad, the thought of reading of people playing poker in the Bahamas is a bit depressing. Oh well, maybe I'll be able to join them next year :-) Now that would be something!

Holy Trapp! A poker playing priest! : Poker Web Watch : Poker

From the article:

"When I think of a priest, I imagine a middle-aged balding man riding a bicycle through his parish. That image may have to be altered to a paintball-gun totting, poker playing twenty-something now that I have discovered Father Andrew Trapp...."

Almost another win...

Almost had my second tournement win tonight.

I've been following a poker site called ChiliPoker on Facebook and Twitter and they have announced via both sites that they are holding a series of 'Community Freerolls' for people following them on these sites.

The first freeroll was tonight so I though I'd give it a go.

The tournement started off with 45 players and I managed to get heads up with a very aggresive player and was doing OK until I ran into the hand below. Usually, in heads-up play, top pair with a King kicker is a pretty good hand, until you find your opponent was slow playing Pocket Queens! Here it is:

This left my opponent with a commanding chip lead and I then crashed out of the game 9 hands later when I shoved with Kd 6d and he called with Ks 4s and hit a 4 on the flop!

Oh well.

The next on of these 'Community Freerolls' is on the 10th May at 1600 BST so I'll have to see if I can make that one and go one better!
